One of my favorite sketches from SDCC 2011…… David Lloyd from V of Vendetta.

So I had him on my list as I saw that he would be in artist alley. I knew this was his first time in AA (I have not seen him before, and I do my homework). So I head over to AA and see him. (I also see my buddy Chain there too). So I wait in line to talk to him. Let me say he is a friendly guy. Some times the dudes from across the pond can seem….. snooty, but he was not snooty at all. He was selling a hard cover crime book he had done and doing quick crayon sketch outlines on the inside cover. So instantly I had a good feeling.

I wait for about 15 min, listening to him talk to the other peeps. I get up there and give the spiel, he seems receptive but tells me that he has a panel to go to and can’t sketch now but to come back at 4:00. So I leave the board with him……

I come back at 4. He has a line (of course), so I get in and wait. Now one thing that really worked out for, by the time I get up to him, I am there only one there…. he sees me, remembers and pulls out the board. He then says, “I brought the paints, haven’t used them yet so I might as well.”

FRIGGIN SWEET!!! He’s going to paint not use crayons.

So he gets all the brushes and paints out and gets to work. I ask him if I can ask questions while he works and he says sure. So of course I ask him about V and Alan Moore. We talk for about 20 min. He talks about the history and the thought process behind V. The mask, the type of “hero” they wanted. The society, what they wanted to say; it was like I was in a college Lit class and we had a guest speaker.

I asked him about Alan, and he was very open with his comments. And all the while he is painting, just creating a work of art.

One thing I love about this painting is the “feeling” it has. Not often does a sketch give of a feeling, this one does.

(on a side note I would love to own this myself. But there is no way I can bid or have some one bid on it for me. It just would not be right. Bummer!)

This sketch just has so much depth to it. And I can say that while he was painting it, at some times he was almost not really paying attention, (but of course he was) in contrast to other times, where it seemed that each brush stroke was carefully placed. I mean, the dude really was into it.

I loved the conversation, I love the sketch, but what I love the most is the experience of it all. I mean it’s David Lloyd the artist from V. Just crazy.
