The Complete Harbinger Discussion with Joshua Dysart, Part 1

Posted by

Harbinger has been a fan favorite amongst the titles that Valiant Comics has published. With issue 25, the first volume of Harbinger came to a conclusion. We felt that we should take a look at this entire volume, and got a special guest to join us for the discussion.

We are excited to share with you, this complete Harbinger discussion, with none other than the scribe behind the series, Joshua Dysart. We discuss Josh’s entire run on Harbinger, all 27 issues of the series, and the events of Harbinger Wars.

We start at the beginning, and discuss each story arc in turn. Here’s what’s in store for this first episode.

Omega Rising: Josh talks about the very beginnings of this series, the decision to focus on Pete’s and Toyo’s relationship with each other for the first story arc, the role that the Harbinger Foundation itself plays in this first arc, and of course, the Bleeding Monk, who was introduced at the very beginning, and plays a crucial role in the overall story. Also, what’s up with Tull? Of course Elveen can’t help but ask about his girl Livewire, and last of all we start to dig into Pete’s character, and what makes him tick.

Renegades: Josh tells about how this arc allowed him to focus on what he loves to write about. Also, Josh tells us which of these issues scared him the most. There was a lot of criticism of Pete’s actions towards Kris in the first issues of Harbinger, and we talk about how that was addressed head on with issue six, which focuses on Kris. Also, what’s up with young/old Harada?

Harbinger Wars: We got a lot of great new characters, particularly Generation Zero. Josh talks about some of the challenges of introducing a lot of new characters at one time, and of describing the strange powers of the Generation Zero kids. The Generation Zero kids, and there situation, is influenced by past events from Josh’s life, which he tells us about. Also, the Bleeding Monk tells Peter to go west, throwing the Renegades into the mix of the Harbinger Wars. Why did he do that? Last of all, the Harbinger Wars brought the H.A.R.D. Corps into the mix, and we discuss their involvement in the story.

Perfect Day: We got duped going in to this arc, which ended up being the craziest of them all. Josh tells about how this arc was an experiment in doing two things at once, to satisfy his cravings as a writer, and also serve the story. We discuss the way that this arc propels the story to the conclusion. Also, this arc shows us hints of the feelings that Kris has towards Charlene, and we talk about those origins, which also leads us to discuss how these characters are written by Josh. We wrap this arc up by talking about the Skateboard Incident.

As we mentioned, this is the first of two episodes. The next episode will have our discussion of the zero issues, Resistance, and Death of a Renegade, plus a whole lot more about this entire run of comic overall. As long as this jam-packed episode is, part two is just as long, and just as packed full of humor and insight. Listen to part one, and make sure to tune in next week for part two.
