Hold up! This is part two of our epic conversation with Joshua Dysart. This episode picks up right where Part 1 left off. Make sure to listen to part 1 of this complete Harbinger interview with Josh Dysart before you start in on this one.

Now, on with the show!

Resistance: We talk about beginning the story with the ending, and the excitement, and challenge, created by that decision. Of course this arc also features the love triangle between Flamingo, Torque, and Faith, and we examine how that developed. Of course there is something looming in this arc: we know someone is going to die. We discuss how that decision developed, and how it did, and didn’t impact the storytelling in this two-issue arc. And of course, Faith. Faith is a character with importance beyond just her roll in the story, and Josh speaks to the importance of Faith as a hero, in our industry, in our world.

Bleeding Monk #0: Bleeding Monk is a character that provides a meta view of creating story and observing story. Also, what is the similarity between the Bleeding Monk and the Perfect Day story? Is the monk alive? Josh talks about the Buddhist influence on the Bleeding Monk’s story. Plus, the hail mary question: why does the monk bleed from his chest, without end?

Death Of A Renegade: Time to take this home. First, Josh talks about the death of a major character, and the two stories he wanted to tell about that death, and why he chose to write those events the way he did. This arc also features the climax of the conflict between Toyo and Pete. We discuss how this ending was important, both as an ending, and a transition for further stories. Josh also likes to subvert the normal approach to comics, and discusses how he did that in this ending.

In addition, we discuss a ton more tidbits about Harbinger, including the following:

  • What happens when two psiots have children? Do the abilities get passed on? Do the powers mix?
  • What determines what powers any given psiot has?
  • What did Grant Morrison ruin for every writer to follow him?
  • Why does the Valiant Universe need two teams of teenage psiots, ie. the Renegades and Generation Zero?
  • Are we going to get more Hidden Moon?
  • We are clamoring for more Darpan!
  • What Megadeth song is playing in Torquehalla?
  • What is the nature of Peter and Faith’s relationship?
  • What are Ingrid’s power, and why does Harada need her?
  • The secret story behind Livewire’s rise as a character

In the end, it all comes back to the beginning, and we talk once more about the beginnings of this story, the chances that they took starting Pete and Kris’s relationship the way they did, and Pete’s character.

In the end, Pete ends this story in the same place that he begins it. This story shows what he is capable of, what he can be when he is surrounded by people that care for him, and what he can be when he loses that.

In the end, Harbinger is a story that affected each one of us, and in the end, we are thrilled to be able to celebrate that.
