OTV NEWSLETTER FOR MARCH 2013

Howdy,

I know, I know. We missed the February Newsletter. Not only that, but the end of February snuck up quick, and this newsletter is a couple days late.

Oi vey.

It means that time is flying, and a lot is going on! 2013 has been a busy year for the OTV crew, and we hope it’s been a good productive year for you as well.

We also hope you’ve been able to take some time to enjoy the finer things in life, song, dance, family, friends, and of course, Valiant Comics.

In this newsletter, I want to share some of the thought behind some of the changes we’ve been making to the show, take a look back at the last couple months, and look ahead to March.

CHANGES TO THE SHOW

In the last couple months, we’ve been shifting and adjusting what we do on the show quite a bit. I’m not sure if it sounds much different to you, but to us, it feels like we’ve been making a lot of changes and adaptations.

First of all, we’ve come to terms with a simple truth: We can’t talk for any Valiant comic for less than 10 minutes. 20 minutes seems to be about our average, and it is not unheard of for us to talk about a single issue for almost an hour!

We also found that with the addition of the fifth title to Valiant’s line up, Shadowman, it’s been harder for us to keep up with every book as they come out, and to talk about them all in our traditional in-depth way.

To accomodate this, we’ve been skipping discussion of some books, and lumping the discussion of a couple books together, like Shadowman 3 and 4, Bloodshot 7 and 8, and Archer & Armstrong 6 and 7. We’re still working to figure out how to provide the best conversations and discussion of the Valiant books.

Also, we got a bit burnt out with just talking about new books. Episode 93 was an attempt to break the routine of talking about new books, and instead discussing a general comic book topic, in the case of Episode 93, we talked about comic book covers.

Some people liked the change, some people didn’t. I think we will continue to have these sorts of topical episodes from time to time, mostly to freshen us up, allow us to geek out on comics in general, and recharge our podcasting batteries.

After all, we don’t just want to be a show that only reviews the latest comics. OTV is bigger and better than that!

LOOKING BACK AT JANUARY AND FEBRUARY

It’s been two months since the last newsletter, and a lot to look back on:

Episode 92: Puzzle Pieced Apart. We discuss Harbinger #6 and #7 in this episode, so if you are a fan of Kris and Flamingo, this is the episode for you!

Episode 93: Covers! Like I mentioned above, we needed a break from the routine of reviewing the latest books, and tackled comic book covers. What do we like, what don’t we like? We talk about it all, plus our all-time favorite covers.

Episode 94: From The Halls Of Torquehalla. Harbinger 8 was a huge surprise to us, John Torkelson was not the character we expected him to be. Wow! Also, we wrap up the entire first arc of Shadowman, covering issues 1 through 4.

Episode 95: Finish Him! We discussed Bloodshot 7 and 8. This book has been getting better and better, plus it’s ramping up into the Harbinger Wars, coming soon. We’re thrilled with this book right now.

LOOKING AHEAD TO MARCH

We’re making yet another change, weekly episodes! This is a bit of an experiment on our part. Usually, we talk for an hour to an hour and a half, and release episodes bi-weekly. We’re gonna try our hand at releasing weekly episodes that are about 45 minutes long. And that starts…

Today! Episode 96: Maching Guns Blasting. If the image of Gilad thrust out of the sunroof of his car, mchine guns blaring, after driving his car off of the adjacent building was the only awesome thing about Archer & Armstrong 7, it would be an awesome isse. But there was more, and we discuss it all.

Coming up:

More Harbinger discussion! We haven’t talked about how our heart strings were plucked by Harbinger #9, and we haven’t talked about the zero issue. We aughtta address that…

Also, you may notice that we’ve been quiet about X-O Manowar in the last couple months. There’s a reason, and we should have a special guest to discuss the Prelude to Planet Death with us, and to rocket us in to the Planet Death story. Look for it later this month.

Episode 100! I’m not sure if this will be coming out at late March or early April, but it is coming. One hundred episodes. Wow.

WONDERCON

Wondercon is coming up at the end of March, in Anaheim, California. Sean and Elveen will be there, and in fact, we’ll be rather busy.

If you are in the Southern California area, We hope you can make it! If you do make it, let us know, we would love to meet up and talk for a bit.

Wondercon is a fantastic show, even if it is no longer in San Francisco (boo). Come on out for this great show!
